Schengen Visa Holders Can now Travel to Two Additional European Nations

According to recent developments, Romania and Bulgaria are expected to join the Schengen area as full members in January 2025. Romania and Bulgaria are anticipated to achieve an important milestone—full membership in the Schengen Area—after years of restricted inclusion.

The two Balkan nations that joined the European Union in 2007 were given partial membership in the Schengen Area in March 2023, and border controls were removed for air and sea travel, as previously reported. However, there were limits at land borders because of concerns about illegal migration, particularly those voiced by Austria, which had prohibited their admission into the zone.

Austria has lifted its resistance following recent talks in Budapest with the interior ministers of Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania. Because of this achievement, EU interior ministers will be able to make a final decision in December 2024.

Getting closer to being a full member of Schengen

Hungarian Interior Minister Sándor Pintér said that Romania and Bulgaria are now "one step closer" to becoming full members of Schengen. A significant requirement for this progress is the installation of a minimum of 100 border guards along the Bulgaria-Turkey border in order to enhance migratory control.

The action has been largely praised by EU officials, including Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Johansson praised the move as a step toward full freedom for the citizens of both Romania and Bulgaria, saying that both nations now "fully belong" to the Schengen Area.

The importance of Schengen's growth

Simple borderless travel is made possible by the Schengen Area, which currently includes 23 of the 27 EU member states in addition to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Every day, millions of travelers benefit from its benefits for unrestricted mobility.

The Schengen Area's external borders will be strengthened and its accessibility improved with Romania and Bulgaria's complete integration. This extension demonstrates the strides Romania and Bulgaria have made in tackling security and migration issues and represents a rising feeling of togetherness inside the European Union.

What it indicates for travelers

The Schengen Area's inclusion of Romania and Bulgaria will facilitate cross-border travel for tourists. Businesses and visitors will profit from lower administrative hurdles, while residents of these nations will have more mobility.
Since Romania and Bulgaria are prepared for full integration, this move advances the Schengen Area's objective of building a more cohesive and integrated Europe. Beginning in January 2025, visitors can expect a more consistent and easily accessible Schengen experience.
